Across the frozen lake behind Leningrad, a man escaped the German blockade clutching a suitcase of writings, a suitcase that contained the work of the writer Daniil Kharms - plays, short stores, poems, jokes and fragments of Russian avant-garde swept away by the Stalinist terror of the 1930s.
