Vibrant, hard-hitting, this intensely theatrical tale begins when the gods come to earth in search of a good person. They award money to the prostitute Shen Te but greedy neighbours instantly take advantage of her good nature. To save herself from bankruptcy she has to invent, and produce, a ruthless male cousin Shui Ta.
