Lady Wishfort, a widow of immense wealth, controls the fortune of her niece, Millamant, who is being wooed by Mirabell. Lady Wishfort hates Mirabell, and he has another enemy in Fainall, who has his own plans for the Wishfort estate. In the resulting battle, a brittle world of glitter and wit is brought to the edge of crisis.
